The NDP in Nova Scotia are fighting to get uranium banned permanently in that province. We must do the same in New Brunswick. We've seen public opinion work in Bali - let's do it here!

Article:
Halifax - NDP Environment Critic, Graham Steele, will introduce legislation this evening in the House of Assembly that, if passed, would place a permanent ban on uranium mining in Nova Scotia.
"There hasn't been uranium exploration or mining in Nova Scotia since the early-1980's," says Steele. "Our mining sector, which continues to be important to the provincial economy, has been able to carry on quite nicely without it. But the ban on uranium mining has never been legislated, and recently the Minister of Natural Resources said that he was open to the idea of lifting the moratorium."
The ban on uranium mining was first introduced by the Buchanan government in 1982, which also set up a Commission of Inquiry headed by Judge Robert McCleave. The ban was continued by successive Orders in Council, the last one in 1995, but its current legal status is unclear. The NDP Bill would remove any doubt about the legal validity of the ban.
"The safety of uranium mining has always been controversial, but that is not the main reason to legislate the moratorium," says Steele. "The most important reason for legislating the ban is that the principal use for uranium is in nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons."
"A legislated ban on uranium mining is widely supported by environmental groups across the province," says Steele. "We believe that the vast majority of Nova Scotians do not wish to be part of the world's uranium economy."

On which side of his mouth will Mr. Baird speak next!
What a difference a day makes - in this case, a few days. In his December 4 statement, Mr. Baird said that "a rise of 2° in the earth's temperature as a result of human activity contributing to global warming, simply put, is unacceptable." Then a few short days later, he seems to be on a mission to destroy any chance of real results coming out of Bali. In the rankings, Canada placed fourth last at 53 for worst performance in 2007 for combatting emissions, China came in at 40th place and the United States was second last at 55. Are we fighting for last place!!
To this government, it's oil first, uranium second, economy third, friends fourth, .... wait a minute, of course, it's probably getting re-elected that's first. Let's all remember the actions of this week when it comes time to vote.

South-East environmental groups have a common space.
One of the difficulties in reaching as many people as possible is what medium to use. Thanks to Nadie Lipton, we now have a great way to keep in touch and share information and advertise what's going on in this area on the environment front.
The march on Saturday, December 8 was just one of the many activities we need to organize to raise awareness and build our numbers.
We welcome your comments, suggestions, and most of all, your help. The next meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the Conservation Council of N.B. is January 9, 2007, at the Press Club on Assumption Blvd., Moncton, starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring a friend!

Moncton Climate Change March was a Huge Success!
www.MonctonClimateChange.org The International Day of Action on Climate Change prompted a worldwide effort to take to the streets and Canadians joined in.
Organizers for the Climate Change March in Moncton did an amazing job getting the public out marching on a cool winter day of December 8th, 2007. With nearly 200 people, it was the largest D8 gathering in Atlantic Canada. There was an educational expo with life-sized information posters for the participants to take with them to distribute to schools and organiziations in the area. There were speeches following the march urging people to get involved in their governments to make the climate a more prominent issue.
More information can be seen on the website http://www.climatechaos.ca, www.MonctonClimateChange.org and the photos have been uploaded to the international site http://gallery.globalclimatecampaign.org/image/tid/272as well as the a larger photo album of the day can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=74994&l=6adb2&id=706040547
December 8 was a huge success across Canada, with the largest climate demonstrations ever held in many cities. But our work is far from over. Bali continues, and the Canadian government continues to try to sabotage the talks there in the crucial final week. Please encourage your networks, allies, members of your organizations, and those newly involved as of December 8 to take action today.
